No Written Contract? ILLEGAL!

Your employer is required to provide a written contract

Is a written contract mandatory?

YES, absolutely! In the Netherlands, an employer is legally required to provide a written employment contract within 1 month of starting your job.

No Contract = Illegal

If you don't receive a written contract, your employer is breaking the law. This is often a sign of exploitation!

What must be included in your contract?

A valid employment contract must contain at least:

  • Your name and address
  • Name and address of the employer
  • Your job title and duties
  • Your salary (per hour or month)
  • Your working hours (how many hours per week)
  • Number of vacation days
  • Notice period
  • Whether it's a permanent or temporary contract

What to do without a contract?

  1. Ask your employer IMMEDIATELY for a written contract
  2. Do this preferably in writing (WhatsApp/email) for evidence
  3. Does your employer refuse? Report this to:
    • Labor Inspectorate SZW: 0800-5151
    • Legal Aid: 0900-8020
    • FNV Union: fnv.nl

Important: Even without a contract, you are still an employee and entitled to minimum wage, vacation days, and continued payment during illness!
